L O V E Everyone; Baba Neem Karoli Fabric Portrait

A guru is not just a groovy teacher.

It’s not just a wise man who can teach you things.

A guru is a spiritual vehicle; an entrance way.

You see, a guru is your doorway to God; your doorway to the beyond.

—Ram Dass

Even though I have been listening to Ram Dass and reading his books for years, I never paid much attention to his guru or the stories about him. But then a few weeks ago I got one of those nudges from the universe to create his portrait. Since I had the gift of time (during COVID and staying safe at home) I really allowed the energy to just flow naturally and for the details like the background, color and lotus flower to just happen without much effort. I wasn't even sure if I was happy with my work until it was done and I could no longer find anything else to fiddle around with.

It's hard to explain, but once I hung the final piece on the wall to take pictures, the mystical quality of his gaze just took over the room and filled it with serenity.

For those who have never heard of Neem Karoli (know to many as Maharaj-ji) he was a Hindu guru, saint, mystic and devotee of the Hindu lord Hanuman. He is known to be the guru for many westerners including Ram Dass, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and countless others. He believed service to others was the highest form of devotion to God.

His beautiful message is simple, Love Everyone, Feed Everyone, Serve Everyone, Remember God.

When we hang images of realized beings in our home, we are showered with the grace of their presence. The beautiful vibration we feel from their presence brings us closer to our journey of becoming our true self.

“Love Everyone” made entirely of fabric, colored pencil on cotton canvas, hand painted with textile dyes and stitched together with love.

If you have an image of a guru in your home, leave a comment and let me know how it feels. I would love to hear!

blessings,

Karen
